Maxim Magazine, which is usually known for other non-tech related “things,” has released its first iPhone web application. The idea is simple - provide users with the information they really need (weather forecast), along with “information” they want. And the result is stunning - the application features photos of hot girls alongside weather forecast information. The easy to user interface is also there, even though we don’t find it to be the key selling point of the web app.
Now I’m asking you, is this the coolest iPhone/iPod Touch web app ever, or not?

According to Apple, they have shipped four million iPhones since launch. AT&T customers comprise of just under half that amount, which leaves a large number of handsets unaccounted for. According to Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research, the sum of AT&T’s subscription numbers and European projections would mean around 1.4 million iPhones are sitting idly on store shelves or being sold as unlocked devices. The latter currently stands at approximately 250,000 units, so that leaves approximately more than half a million iPhones that are missing in action. What are some of your theories behind this? Does this mean that HTC, having sold (not shipped) more than 2 million HTC Touches is actually the big winner here?

Everyone wants an iPhone, right? No? Well, it’s a a hot-selling handset for sure - a tempting mark for wannabe crooks looking to turn a quick buck. Following on that other idiotic criminal venture that was caught on tape (okay, it’s wasn’t literally a tape, but rather a digital recording), two retarded New York truck drivers hatched a plan to steal the 300 iPhones, destined for Hong Kong, that were sitting in the rear of the delivery truck.
Apparently, the bumbling duo swiped the iPhone-shipment and replaced them with reams of paper. They offloaded the, uh, load, at Kennedy Airport, quit their jobs, and kicked off plans to move to Florida. Emmanuel Etienne, 20, of 761 Grand Terrace, and Jarred E. Thomas, 22, of 520 Woodland Estates Dr. (it’s great that we know their addresses, isn’t it?), were in the midst of buying up everything a pair of ghetto criminals could want - diamond stud Yankees earrings, Mark Ecko watches, Nike high-top sneakers, and, wait for it, a pair of matching Maroon-colored cars (an Acura and a Volkswagon) - when they got nabbed by police. The two men were charged with second-degree larceny.
The crooks may have gotten away with their scheme if Cathay Pacific airline workers didn’t notice the shady-looking wrapping on the shipment of boxes. Etienne and Thomas, in their rush to buy matching Maroon-colored cars, did a crap job of re-shrink-wrapping the boxes. The questionable wrapping immediately drew the suspicion of Cathay Pacific workers, who found the reams of paper in place of iPhones.
We’re not condoning illicit trade-practices, but come on. If you’re going to steal, then do it right. Dimwits…

Wow, some people have a lot of free time. At least it’s good for a laugh.
Some people love the iPhone, some people hate, but everyone knows what it is. Case in point, anyone out there not know what this video parodies?

Aside from the home-button double-click feature that was introduced with the iPhone v1.1.1, there really isn’t any other speed-dial option on the iPhone. With the introduction of WebClips on the iPhone v1.1.3, Nate True has discovered another nifty use for the web-page shortcut feature.
Along the same lines as that WebClips-based homescreen picture album hack, Nate True has come up with a solution that will put speed-dial thumbnail icons on your homescreen. The hack will take a bit of webpage-coding know-how (or just some instruction-following know-how), and a web server that you can use.

The instructions involved putting a script on a webpage that, when clicked, will prompt the iPhone to dial the embedded phone number. You then turn that webpage into a WebClip (with the appropriate picture) and you’ll have image-based speed-dial right on your iPhone’s homescreen. How cool is that?
Find Nate True’s instructions on creating a WebClip-based homescreen speed-dial thumbnail icon here.

iPhone and iPod Touch owners who love retro videogames, rejoice! There is now a SNES emulator in the works for both Cupertino devices, although it is still in beta and not freely available for everyone. Folks who are interested in getting first dibs can always join the forums and drop some coin as a donation to get a free copy. I think the final version definitely warrants some sort of thank you note in the form of money to show the developer your appreciation. Soon touching will be done in a new way, and not on a Nintendo DS.

Anyone with an iPhone will definitely want to do their best to keep it scratch-free as long as possible (we know it is inevitable), which is why OtterBox has come up with their iPhone case that was paraded at the recently concluded MacWorld. This polycarbonate shell snaps together to safeguard the device, while a scratch-resistant polycarbonate membrane prevents the screen from picking up dust and stops light water intrusion. Sounds like my kind of case for any shiny new device, and not only the iPhone.
