The iPhone is going to have the same effect as IE4, but unfortunately there are a fair amount of web developers who don’t care about progress or innovation. The dogma of web standards has blinded them, to the point where they don’t even understand how standards come to be in the first place. It is good at a lot of things. Playing music, surfing the web, pretending to slash people with a lightsaber (Google “phone saber” and you will see what I mean). It is truly a revolutionary device and it will stir up competition in the cellular market. This will surely help Cingular, or should I say the new AT&T, stay on top.
It is not simply canabilizing other phone sales, it’s eating into desktop consumption . With better apps on it I only see this trend getting bigger, and it is not the mobile business, it is a handheld without Nintendo or Sony. Mobile applications are sold into disparate platforms through intermediaries who operate best in monopoly or oligopoly positions. It is already a great mobile internet device, smartphone, and media player. It will certainly be a solid casual game platform. The iPhone is back in business.
It is drumming up enough interest that the establishment isn’t shrugging off its impact anymore. In the U.K., heavy preorders of the phone crashed the website of the carrier. It is simply the coup de grace of a series of moves that has led Apple to the point it is at. It is quite a testament to the Company, its Management and its employees, considering its dark days were not so long ago. It is basically a blackberry matched with an ipod. So add the cost of each of those and you’re saving money at the end of the day. It isn’t just anti-male, it’s anti-big girls, and it is not optimized-yet.
The iPhone is pretty fun for music, but common wires? I think A2DP will likely come to the phone in an update, but again, it’s one of those things they COULD have put into the phone and SHOULD have put into the phone and didn’t. The phone is a closed system, with locked down hardware and platform, and rigid rules for outside developers. The phone’s browser is essentially the desktop version of Safari on the Mac. Web browsing is finally a non-frustrating experience on a phone - a first.
